No, we’re not talking about hitting your grandma up for money at Sunday dinner. SOUP is a grassroots model of funding—sort of like a pitch fest and dinner party rolled into one. Started in TK, it has spread to hundreds of cities around the world. The format varies, but generally entails a group of people showing up for a soup dinner. Each person makes a donation of $5 or so and the money is put into a pool. During the evening, local entrepreneurs and artists present their ideas, and the money is awarded to one or more presenters chosen by the audience. As the Sunday SOUP site explains, “SOUP is a powerful tool to start conversations, practice democracy and fund new projects/people/ideas in our neighborhood, community or city.” Now that’s food for thought!
